NOTICE OF COMPETITION
The Province of Macerata and the Organizing Committee
Committee are pleased to invite you to participate, with one of your artist-bindings in
the
SECOND INTERNAZIONALE BOOKBINDING ART
WORK EXHIBITION IN ITALY
"100 MAESTRI PER IL CANTICO DELLE
CREATURE"
That will be held in Macerata, in the Marches, Italy, during June 2002.
PARTECIPATION RULES
| ART. 1 | The exhibition is open to all bookbinders, of any nationality and artistic
inclination, be they amateurs or professionals. The box or jacket are not indispensable
and in any case will not be subject to judgement. "Object shaped book bindings" or "book works" will not be accepted for logistical reasons and further costs that they may entail, and due to the impossibility of placing them in the pre designed show-cases. |
| ART. 2 | The application form to participate must reach Consulman srl by 31 March 2001 and should include : the annexed form (registration form), together with the sum of Lit.170.000 (one hundred and seventy thousand Italian liras), that will cover the cost of: A) the Book, B) the packaging for returning the bookbinding, C) the shipment costs, D) the illustrated catalogue. E) all the correspondence that will take place. |
You will also be supplied with an adhesive label, agreed upon with the Ministry of Finance, that should be applied to the exterior of the package, so as to facilitate the customs operations on arrival in Italy. |

TECHNICAL DATA RELATING TO THE BOOK THAT IS TO BE BOUND
| ART. 3 | The Book will contain a selection of translations and versions in different languages (over 120) of the immortal "Cantico delle Creature" or "Cantico a Frate Sole" of S.Francesco d'Assisi. The format of the Book will be 16 x 24 cm. The ecological paper weighing 120gr., made of seaweed that comes from the Venetian Lagoon, has been specially supplied by the Cartiere Favini Spa of Rossano Vicentino, like all the other supportive materials made of paper used in this competition. The stylistic elaboration of the texts will be carried out under the supervision of the Masters of the Book School of Urbino. The Lithographic press ERREBI of Falconara M.ma. will carry out the two colour printing of the various texts. |
SCIENTIFIQUE COMMITTEE

Scientific Committee, that has the task of selecting the bookbindings, will be chaired by:

SELECTION AND EXHIBITION OF THE
BINDINGS
| ART. 5 | All the bookbindings
that we receive , numbered according to the order in which they arrive and placed in
special anonymous containers , will be submitted to the judgement of the Committee by the
Organizer Mr Antonio Toccaceli and his assistants, in the presence of Mr. Yves Devaux, expert of
the "Art & Métiers du Livre", representing all the
bookbinders, to insure correctness and impartiality. The International Scientific
Committee will select the bindings according to the following categories: - 100 Masters of the Cantico, that will be awarded prizes and exhibited - 200 bindings that will simply be exhibited. - All the other bindings that we receive and that are not exhibited will in any case be featured in the Catalogue. |
The bindings will remain on show for the entire duration of the exhibition in the Basilica di San Paolo in Macerata and successively in rooms put at our disposal in the Sacro Convento in Assisi with whom we hope to reach an agreement soon. |

PRIZE GIVING
| ART. 6 | The prize giving will
be held at the Lauro Rossi Theatre in Macerata on the day of the opening of the
exhibition, in the presence of members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Italy , of
Civil and Religious authorities and representatives of other Religious Faiths. The 100 Masters of the Cantico will be awarded: - A specially struck medal and Master's Diploma. - The art work and technical data will be featured on our internet site until the year 2005. All participants will receive a Diploma of Participation. |
| All the 300 selected bookbindings will participate in various exhibitions abroad that we will organize, (Paris and Brussels are already in the schedule) and thus must be left with the Organization for the necessary time. Catalogue and return of the bookbindings at the end of the Exhibition. |
CATALOGUE AND RETURN OF THE BOOKBINDINGS
AT THE END OF THE EXHIBITION
| ART. 7 | The catalogue will include illustrations of all the bookbindings received, along with their technical notes and each participant's curriculum vitae. The catalogue will be conceived as a Photographic Art book, enriched by photos taken by the renowned artist Giorgio Marinelli that will illustrate the most significant pieces. You can get a preview on our Internet site in the "collaborator's" room under the heading "Catalogue Project". |
| The catalogue will be given to all those who have sent a binding. The 300 binders whose books have been selected can collect the catalogue during the event in Macerata or ,if they are absent , they will receive it by post. All the other participants will receive it at the end of the event together will their binding by Swiss Post, in a single container designed to hold both. | |
| ART. 8 | Upon receiving the bindings Consulman s.r.l. will verify their condition and if they should have arrived damaged, the Organization will immediately inform the bookbinder to whom the binding belongs, documenting the damage, so that they may contact, and be reimbursed by, their shipper. We thus advise you to package your art work carefully and to insure it for the purpose of shipping, annexing, if possible, a copy of the declared value that will also be valid for future purposes. Once they have been taken into Consulman s.r.l's custody, the bindings will be automatically insured by Lloyd's of London against fire, theft , acts of vandalism, and other damage for the entire duration of the exhibition and for the exhibitions abroad. The return shipment will be insured by Swiss Post. Eventual damage to the bindings returned to you, must be communicated immediately to Consulman s.r.l. within 15 days upon receipt of the package. The communication must be accompanied by photographic documentation and a declaration by the shipper's carrier. |
CONCERNING THE DATES
| ART. 9 | The closing date, mentioned above, is immutable. Consulman s.r.l. reserves the right to accept subscriptions and bindings that reach us after the closing date only in exceptional and documented cases. This is due to circumstances that are beyond our control. Forum |
